Could you be our next segment?

Our culture

Satsuma isn’t like other agencies.

We attract the very best staff because we don’t insist they are geographically located on the doorstep of our agency headquarters in Suffolk.

In fact, our spread across the UK functions better – allowing us to work with companies all over the country where we almost certainly have a member of staff nearby for those face-to-face meetings.

Not only do our team all work remotely but they work flexibly too.

This is because we trust our staff to deliver. On their own terms. In their own time.

And because this gives them a better balanced work and home life, they give us – and our clients – 100% when they are online.

We’re always looking for Satsuma segments so get in touch if you think you’d be a great fit for our team.

Ellen Widdup

Ellen was a national newspaper journalist for more than a decade before starting her own PR agency.

First working as a reporter and news editor for the Evening Standard and The Daily Mail, she then wrote regularly for The Telegraph, The Times, The Sun, The Express, The Mirror and The Guardian and penned an award-winning column for the East Anglian Daily Times for more than five years.
Ellen moved into a consultancy role for a number of PR companies in 2010 and started her first agency in 2015.
Her company produced full brand repositioning statements, tone of voice and style guideline documents and internal communications strategies for Barings Asset Management, Capgemini, Vattenfall, Clarks Shoes, Volvo, Slater & Gordon and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
As a consultant, she has also developed and led award-winning PR, marketing and social media campaigns for businesses in a full range of sectors.
In 2021, she set up Satsuma Group, bringing together experts in the full range of creative services.

Lauren Gardner

Lauren worked as a journalist for a decade before moving into PR.

Her work has also won a succession of industry awards for PR in a range of sectors and she has developed growth strategies for our clients that have led to a host of impressive business awards too.
Lauren heads up account teams for a wide selection of clients at Satsuma, overseeing strategies to align campaigns with specific objectives.
Her work involves a large amount of operational management from planning projects to coordinating various teams, and from managing budgets to nurturing client relationships.
Lauren’s superb leadership abilities keeps teams focused and her attention to detail and dedication to her clients has facilitated a raft of word-of-mouth recommendations for Satsuma.
Her primary accounts are in education, construction, engineering, business services, legal and finance.

Clare O’Keefe

Clare is a former journalist who worked for eight years in regional newspapers.

First Health Correspondent and then on news desk at the Nottingham Post, she managed a large team of reporters across Nottingham.
Clare moved into PR after taking a role at the British Red Cross, concentrating primarily on media relations, social media and media training and managing all crisis communications.
During this time, her calm, kind and inquisitive nature helped her develop relationships with a large number of vulnerable people whose stories were told through powerful case studies which had a huge influence on fundraising.
Clare then moved into an internal communications role for the charity, which has nearly 30,000 volunteers and staff, and, as Internal Publications Manager, planned and delivered engaging content across all internal communications channels.
She edited the in-house bi-monthly magazine Life, working with a team of writers and graphic designers, produced weekly national updates and created content for the organisation’s intranet news service.
She also mapped out content strategy, developed a content calendar, and managed standards and best practice to ensure consistent quality and tone of voice – all of which she continues to do for Satsuma.

Tom Coleman

Tom may be a mediocre cricketer, surfer and golfer in his spare time – but he is as professional as they come when it comes to graphic design.
Specialising in creative thinking, design creation and production – and fuelled by creativity, visual problem solving and Dungeons & Dragons podcasts, Tom has carved out a successful 15-year career in visual communication (and counting). At Satsuma, his creative services begin with helping our clients form their carefully-considered brand identity, and extends beyond with ongoing marketing, design and digital collateral creation.

Kelly-Anne Byres

Kelly-Anne Byres leads the financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and invoicing for the company.

A multi-award-winning businesswoman, Kelly has been recognised on a regional and national level for her skills and dedication.

One of Management Today’s 35 Women Under35, she boasts a level of business prowess which helps Satsuma deliver at its best.

Lisa Smith

Lisa Smith

Lisa has more than 15 years’ experience working in busy PR agencies and large international in-house teams, enhancing and nurturing companies’ reputations.

She is a determined and confident communicator who consistently brings fresh ideas to the table and is passionate about transforming complex information into digestible stories.

From financial services and construction, to technology and utilities, Lisa has wide and varied cross-industry experience.

After graduating with a degree in Journalism, she moved into public relations following a successful internship with the communications team at British Gas. This is where she forged a love for media relations and all things comms-related.

As a writer, her work has been published in the national press and contributed articles on parenting for The Independent, The Daily Mirror, and the national parenting website, BabyCentre.

Penny Stretton

Penny has an impressive 15-year career in journalism working across national newspapers, women’s magazines and digital consumer news sites.

She started her career as a reporter at The Hampstead and Highgate Express before being snapped up for the Daily Express’s graduate trainee programme.
After a stint as Senior Feature Writer at the Daily Express she took on the role of Deputy Women’s Editor, overseeing three editions of the lifestyle section a week.
Keen to be part of the explosion in digital journalism, she then joined the MailOnline as Assistant Femail Editor before making a move into freelance journalism and writing for some of the UK’s most read consumer magazines and news sites and brands.
Her first step into PR was as Director of Communications at the education charity SkillForce, where she worked closely with the communications team of patron HRH The Duke of Cambridge, writing speeches on his behalf and working with him to create videos and other materials for the charity.
At Satsuma she continues to give the royal treatment to the content of clients in a diverse range of sectors.

She has a wealth of experience working for clients across the logistics, accountancy, print, hospitality and construction sectors as well as running accounts for a number of mental health charities.

Gemma is a detail-orientated and enthusiastic social media executive who freelanced for eight years as a content creator before joining Satsuma in March 2023.

She worked as Assistant Editor for two B2B magazines for almost 10 years prior to this and then facilitated the launch of four websites for a well-known pub chain, produced all their content and ran their social media channels.

Always keen to learn, she has a French degree, an Annica Digital DMI and a DMI Pro qualification in Digital Marketing and is now looking to widen her skills in the digital marketing still further.

Gemma is highly organised and very creative and works across a number of our accounts.

Beth Moody

Our impressive PR intern Beth is a super talented third year undergraduate student studying Media Communications and Culture.

With an array of skills across digital media, as well as music and podcasting, Beth has found a passion for journalism, PR and advertising and is bringing all that energy and enthusiasm to a brand-new role here at Satsuma.

Beth already has some experience in the sector, creating online content for businesses and taking control of social media accounts.

Some of her standout achievements to date include being awarded a first for a short film, music video and podcast episode all within her first year of her degree as well as creating a hard-hitting advertisement campaign highlighting men’s mental health. Beth and her team also created an impressive set of marketing collateral to promote the film including print posters and a 30 second TV ad.

If that wasn’t enough, this Satsuma segment also plays several instruments, writes songs and produces music.

Her technical capabilities really complement the team here, with knowledge across Premier Pro, Photoshop and Logic Pro Beth is definitely one to look out for as we continue to grow and succeed at Satsuma.
